No. No, you didn’t read that wrong. The Father of Shock Rock with the face of a horror-novel mime in a Salvador Dali painting, alleged murderer of chickens, who uses blood and boa constrictors as on-stage accessories, the guy who left parents in the 70’s absolutely stunned and horrified, THE one…THE only … Mr. ALICE COOPER appeared alongside Kermit, Ms. Piggy and the rest of the Muppet Show gang as an agent of the Devil for a Halloween-themed episode that aired on October 28, 1978. As part of all the spooky fun, Alice donned a Dracula cape and full makeup to groove with a few “ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties” while singing “Welcome to My Nightmare” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz0lXNNkqac&noredirect=1). In the very same episode, he sported a collegiate cap and gown that was later torn off to reveal a ripped red spandex leotard, while dancing with a few giant Muppets and belting out his other hit, “School’s Out” (there’s even a tiny explosion in this one…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmewc2Uqon4). Alice even showed off his softer side while tenderly crooning “You and Me” to a bird-like creature with a beak as big as his own (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Vp_Zc7IesA). And a good time was had by all, including Vincent Price, who also made a special appearance in the episode.
I suppose nowadays, Alice’s appearance on The Muppets would be a little like Marilyn Manson appearing on “Yo Gabba Gabba” (but far less disturbing than that) – something you’d have to actually see to believe. But if you’re a true fan of Alice’s, then it comes as no surprise because you already know he has an amazing sense of humor, and that there’s far more to him than freaking out audiences with his ghoulish stage persona. In addition to being a rock-n-roll icon, among other things, he’s also an author, having written a fantastic autobiography that is well-worth the read (http://www.amazon.com/Alice-Cooper-Golf-Monster-Becoming/dp/0307382915/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414763926&sr=1-1&keywords=alice+cooper); an actor (his appearance in “Wayne’s World” as the object of Wayne & Garth’s fan worship is not to be missed); an avid golfer who took up the sport as a way of battling and overcoming alcoholism; a dedicated husband and father; a true believer in his faith; and just an all-around kind, gentle, humble and grateful soul. These days, when he isn’t touring (and believe you me – if you have a chance to see the man live, run, do not walk. He puts on a phenomenal show that will blow your brains right out of your head), he can be found hosting his very own syndicated classic-rock radio show, “Nights With Alice Cooper” (http://www.nightswithalicecooper.com). He’s the hardest working man in hard rock and his “minions” reap the benefit.
So, that’s it for today! The weekly “space junk cleanup” will be back next Friday with our regularly scheduled programming. In the meantime, welcome to Kermit’s nightmare…I think you’ll kinda like it… (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbLG7KvzmmY)
Have a safe and happy Halloween!!!
